I’m of the opinion that if you carry a camera around with you and take pictures of everything worth taking a picture of, you’ll eventually have a nice little portfolio of “amazing”, perhaps even “award-winning”, images. Diametrically opposite this scenario are the photographers who stage and pose every little part of their pictures. These are the catalog photographers, the glamour and fashion guys and occassionally, an artist or two.
Seemingly outside this continuum are guys like Trent Parke and well, dare I mention the Grande Dame of genre, Diane Arbus? Most documentary pic-makers just show up and nab the event. Others, like our Mr. Parke, seem to have an almost supernatural ability to capture unplanned art that no one else’s eyes are even trained to see.
