I’m on a hunt for a decent version of Bach’s cello suites. I’ve listened to four versions so far and I’m at the point where I want to burn them on CD just so I can have something to hit with a hammer. Somewhere in my murky past I have heard a version that isn’t all ass-dragging legato. I get that there has got to be extreme flow, but WTF? Why does it have to be at the sacrifice of articulation? I’ll keep you posted on my hunt, but so far, from total ass-skooch upward, the sad attempts are, Jian Wang, Rostropovich, Alexander Rudin and the best of the bunch, Paul Tortelier.
