Sergei Rachmaninoff, Symphonic Dances

This is one of those pieces that is made, not for the concert hall, but for the home stereo, maybe even purely for headphones. Yeah, I know, it was written in 1940, long before the average joe could blast his neighbors out of their barcaloungers with subwoofers the size of UFOs. But I’m spoiled. I never want to hear awesome pieces like this played way-the-hell-across an amphitheatre by an orchestra the size of my grade 4 class. I want volume. I want crystal clarity of every instrument. I want to feel my chest collapse when the cellos come in and change the air pressure in the room like thunderheads.

This is one of my favorite pieces of all time. Hey, I know Youtube doesn’t compare to vinyl. But give it a listen and go out and find yourself a killer great recording of it. Crank the volume and sit back. Oh, and you’re welcome.
