Retro Week: Led Zeppelin, The Battle of Evermore

Much has been made of this little band over the years. Pretty much everything they did was a tour de force, and in terms of pure quality, would rarely be matched by any other group of musicians. The reason I’ve chosen this piece is not that it’s the best, the loudest, or the greatest example of their talents. I’ve chosen it because it quietly proves they aimed at something far higher than money, fame, music charts, or the mere satisfaction of collaborative music-making, and they hit it with a bullseye. There is something orgasmic here, some small glimpse of the ecstatic that makes me glad to be alive.
