Years ago, I heard a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” on the radio. It was quite good and I never caught the name of the band. The other day, I decided to google covers of the song and do a quick survey to try and find it. Wikipedia lists 18 cover versions by various bands, and in the process of sampling them, I found a few more on YouTube.
This version by OSI (Office of Strategic Influence), is head and shoulders above the rest. The other covers range in quality from merely mediocre to shockingly bad. None are as good as the one from Ummagumma, though two deserve honorable mention. Psychic TV’s version tries hard to capture the spirit of Pink Floyd and the instrumental cover by Mika Vainio scores points for originality.
