The word macarbre is not used often enough. Actually, it isn’t just the word, it’s having a use for it. I agree with media critics who complain there’s too much violence on TV and in the theatre. The problem is of course too much crappy violence (CSI – Miami, anyone?) and not enough excellent violence (Kill Bill, The Sopranos, etc) There’s also too much horror. Ever since the major studios decided to invest in cheap horror, we’ve been inundated with crap. Please, we need less horror and more of the horrific, like Silence of the Lambs, like The Exorcist.
And yes, we need more of the macabre. And not just Tim Burton’s goth-macabre. We need more of the thoughtful kind of work that Laurie Lipton is doing for us.
