I used to get all hot-headed about snooty critics classing the likes of Maxfield Parrish and Howard Pyle steps lower than non-programmatic, non-commercial, “fine” artists. Now, I’ve reconciled myself to the fact that the playing field is never level, that there is a crapload of fine art out there that is really not very fine and it still gets critical acclaim, and that all art, populist art included, has heart-wrenchingly great practitioners as well as quarter-witted boobs who should really have just been encouraged to be valets.
